This victory was a long time coming for the Philippines. And on the night of September 28, 2013 at the Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia, the blue crown finally landed on the head of a Philippine representative. Megan Young had ended the country’s search for the very first win in the beauty pageant that started back in 1951.

After more than six long decades of trying, it was definitely worth the wait. And how! Miss World 2013 can be considered as one of the grandest editions of the competition ever. This was also when the transition from having a beach beauty segment (where only select candidates participated with sarongs covering the lower part of their bodies) to having no swimsuits at all the following year.

And you can relive the entire event below.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young returned to a hero’s welcome in the country. And despite the rains last October 11, the people came out in droves to wave and cheer the achievememt. Julia Morley was also on Cloud 9 at the time, seeing how rapturous and overwhelming the homecoming parade turned out. She was definitely pleased with giving us the crown at just the right time.

And like a Mother to her newborn, Julia showered Megan with love and guidance throughout the reign.

From there, Megan took to heart a promise of being the best Miss World ever. She fulfilled a year-long stint that was productive and rewarding for both her and the organization. As a result, she continues to take part in events of Miss World up to this day – be it hosting, charity work or personal appearances.

Now married to actor Mikael Daez, she continues to be a cool inspiration to many beauty queens, pageant aspirants and even showbiz upstarts – smart, well-spoken and always updated.

In my opinion, it might take long before another Filipina is crowned Miss World. But who knows? A second one will serendipitously come in less time than we had to wait for the first one. And hopefully, it will also be in everyone’s lifetime. Or at least to everyone who savored the sweetest victory that was Miss World 2013.

Happy Easter to one and all!
